The new electric cars will use a rear-wheel power train that delivers twice the power as conventional nickel-metal batteries TOKYO, Dec 29 (Reuters) – Japan’s Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) and NEC Corp (6701.T) will invest at least $1.1 billion to make lithium-ion batteries for about 200,000 electric and hybrid cars annually in 2011 or later, the Nikkei business daily said on Monday. About 7 million vehicles, 10% of the world’s total annual vehicle sales, will be powered entirely by electricity by 2020, predicted Nissan Motor CEO Carlos Ghosn in a speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week. Nissan is bringing the first of their electric cars to market by 2010 in many locations around the United States. According to Alan Buddendeck, Nissan’s VP for North American Corporate Communications, this car will be priced between $22-$25K and have at least a range of 100 miles. Carlos Ghosn, head of the Renault SA-Nissan Motor Co. alliance, said Wednesday that the French-Japanese partnership will supply the state of Oregon with electric cars starting late in 2010 the latest in a series of agreements aimed at encouraging demand for the ultra-clean vehicles. [...] Petaluma took the first step Monday in entering a partnership with Nissan Motor Co. that could put its employees in electric vehicles by 2010. Presumably the battery packs will be leased from Nissan, though as Renault-Nissan is the car maker most closely connected to Shai Agassi’s Better Place, it may be case of buying the car from Nissan and leasing the power pack from a third-party such as BP. Previously we reported on Nissan’s electric car, which it plans to release in several markets in 2010 followed by global roll out in 2012. But the expensive nature of the battery technology means that Nissan will be selling its electric cars without batteries – requiring the consumer to lease the battery from Nissan.
