Li-Ion is 30 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than the batteries used in current hybrids TOKYO, Aug 6 (Reuters) – A joint venture led by car battery maker GS Yuasa Corp (6674.T: Quote, Profile, Research) will start production of lithium-ion batteries with output five times bigger than originally planned to stay ahead of rivals as a key supplier for electric vehicles, the Nikkei business daily reported on Wednesday. At the meeting, the company also announced that it will install manufacturing equipment for electrodes of Li-ion rechargeable batteries for use in electrically-powered vehicles such as hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids and electric cars. The equipment will be built in a new plant in Kyoto, Japan, and its operation will start in March 2009, according to the company. |
