Honda Motor Co., a holdout as other large carmakers unveiled plans for plug-in, battery-powered models, increased its commitment to hybrid vehicles by announcing a joint venture to supply lithium-ion batteries. DETROIT–General Motors’ October U.S. sales plunged 45% and Ford’s dropped 30%, as low consumer confidence and tight credit combined to scare customers away from showrooms. Now, Honda’s go-it-alone streak is being tested anew–in a green-car era when automakers are racing to crank up the miles per gallon. Like a decade ago, Honda is charting its own course. For instance, it has no interest in electric cars, despite the buzz for emissions-free driving.
HONG KONG – Honda Motor, Japan’s second-largest automaker, is a longtime also-ran against its largest rival, Toyota Motor, in the race to develop hybrid cars.
