China: Chinese Automakers May Buy GM and Chrysler

The paper cites a senior official of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology– the state regulator of China’s auto industry– who dropped the hint that “the auto manufacturing giants in China, such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, have the capability and intention to buy some assets of the two crisis-plagued American automakers.”

GM Announces $370 Million for Electric Car Plant in Mich.

A piece of good news has finally come out of Detroit’s constantly ailing auto industry. General Motors Thursday announced that the company will invest $370 million in building a new manufacturing plant for its global 4-cylinder engines in Flint, Mich. Fittingly, Flint is a city made famous in a Michael Moore documentary that detailed how the city was wronged by GM with huge layoffs for thousands of residents.

U.S. Congress Considering $25B in Loans to Automakers

Democratic Congressional leaders said on Tuesday they intend to support U.S. auto companies with at least $25 billion in low interest loans, according to a Reuters report.
The funds would be offered to help General Motors Corp (NYSE: GM), Ford Motor Corp. (NYSE: F) and Chrysler LLC (CBS.UL) retool factories to make more fuel efficient vehicles and increase battery research for plug-in vehicles.
