USA: How far do we drive and can EVs satisfy our needs?

The main barrier to electrification of the car industry is the electric car’s limited range. The fear of getting stranded on the side of the road with an empty battery, first observed in General Motor’s EV1 project is named: ‘Range Anxiety’. The purpose of this study is to characterize driving behavior of the United States population (on a National and State level) and to give an overview of what percentage of trips can be covered with a fully charged electric car. Also, this study has successfully identified factors that influence driven distances, such as the effect of urbanity. Besides that, we study in more depth the energy consumption of electric cars depending on driving conditions. The second research goal is to provide future research on grid integration of electric cars with a temporal outline of when electric cars will be connected to the electricity grid (data accessible below). The data source used is the National Household Travel Survey of 2009.

USA: Nissan Donates EV Quick Chargers

Nissan’s battle to expand the electric car’s market continues. Soon to be installed in major parts of Atlanta are two donated and newly developed DC quick chargers. Introduced in November 2011, the systems were researched and built by Nissan and have been most prominent in Japan. When they become fully operational, the Georgia city will be one of the first places in the U.S. to get the chargers. With 480 volts on tap, the compact system can bring a zero emissions LEAF from a depleted state to up to 80 percent full in less than 30 minutes. That time is drastically reduced compared to fastest standard recharge time of about 3.5 hours and the systems will work with other electric vehicles.

The core of a car’s identity is at risk with electric vehicles coming onto market

BERLIN: With so much of a car’s production having moved beyond the walls of the automaker’s final assembly plant, the engine has become one of the few distinguishing items left in a brand’s portfolio. But even this core asset seems to be slipping away, especially among European makers who are rushing to meet stringent carbon dioxide targets and to gain footholds in the electric vehicle market.

USA: The Lobby For Lithium Batteries On Aircraft

The Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA) Wednesday took aim at a recent FA study about the risks posed to aircraft by lithium batteries, calling it “scare-mongering” and distracting from important safety issues. The FAA’s Freighter Airplane Cargo Fire Risk Model (PDF) assessed the likely number of U.S.-registered fire accidents through 2020. The answer, according to the study, is about one every other year. The FAA’s findings assumed batteries contributed to two key incidents it used to develop its risk model. According to the PRBA, “no facts are presented that indicate any involvement of batteries in the incidents.” When the batteries do burn, there is little doubt about their destructive potential.

Contest: What’s Your One-Liner on Plug-In Vehicles?

Nov 4, 2011 (From the CalCars-News archive)
Creating a mass movement of plug-in car drivers involves convincing one driver at a time to give electricity a chance. That means finding the right messages, and delivering them in a persuasive way. Here’s your chance in the next seven days to devise a memorable pitch — for plug-in cars or just for plug-in hybrids — and an opportunity to win a prize. If you come up with something “insanely great,” you could see your words all over, and contribute significantly to the success of the campaign for vehicle electrification.

Global Auto Forum: What radical changes will the EV bring to the auto industry?

As everyone knows, the arrival of electric vehicles to the mass market will happen sooner rather than later. But are EV’s the be–all-and-end-all of the new energy race? Are there other potential fuels or alternatives available? At the World Auto Forum in Chengdu a briefing session was held to discuss what changes the oncoming wave of electric cars would bring to the global automotive market. The session was chaired by Mr. Yang Shi Min from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and joining him on stage were Professor Dr Stefan Bratzel from the Center of Automotive Studies at Germany’s Applied Sciences University, Chen Yu Dong, the president of Bosch China, Mr. Lian Yu Bo, the Deputy CEO of BYD, Nissan Vice President Mr. Takashi Nishibayashi, and also Mr. Chen Bin Bo from Dongfeng-Honda.

The Secret to a Great Electric Car? How It Brakes

By Brad Berman · October 19, 2011
What’s the secret sauce of electric cars? In a speed-obsessed society, you’d expect it to be acceleration—which most EVs have in spades. But actually the thing that distinguishes one electric car from one another is not how quickly it gets going, but the way it stops. In recent weeks, I’ve reached out to engineers from BMW, Ford, Toyota, Honda and Tesla to learn about each company’s approach to regenerative braking—the system that provides the feel or flavor of their electric cars.

Hybrid owners among the first to buy recently launched electric cars

Not surprisingly, hybrid owners were among the first to trade in their Prius hybrid for a Chevrolet Volt or Nissan Leaf during 2011. Those who years ago made a commitment to the greening of the planet and their pocketbooks logically would be among the first to take the next step to a plug-in vehicle promising even greater savings on both fronts.
