USA: Nissan Leaf rolls into Northeast Ohio more than a year after sales started in other states

BEDFORD, Ohio – Would you like to say goodbye to oil changes, and turn your car’s heat or air conditioning on with the touch of your phone? An all-electric car delivers conveniences that a regular car won’t.
Ordering a Nissan Leaf isn’t as easy as stopping by a car dealership. With the Leaf, you need to order it online and get an inspection of your home.
With a gas-guzzling RV and Honda CRV parked in Anthony Smith’s driveway, you wouldn’t expect to see an electric vehicle charging station in his garage.
“My car is 9 years old so I’m due to get a new one,” Smith said. Smith decided to invest in new technology, and buy the Nissan Leaf. It runs only on electricity.
“You’ll get 100 miles per charge, which is equivalent in electricity to $2.40,” Smith said.
With the CRV, Smith estimated he paid $16 per 100 miles. With the Leaf, he expects to save $12 every 100 miles. The savings are real, but there are big upfront costs.
“This for me is a little more than $3,000,” Smith said pointing to his electric charging station.
The charging station isn’t free despite the $37,000 price tag Smith paid for his Leaf. There are cheaper models, and you can take advantage of a $7,500 federal tax credit. More...

Nissan Tracks EV Charge Points in Real Time, Shares With Leaf Owners

Range is one of the doubts many potential customers have about electric cars; Nissan is trying to counter this by providing charging stations for networks in a number of different locations. In its home country of Japan, Nissan is even going a step farther to make sure that not only are those charging stations available but also that their customers know exactly where they are.
As of next Monday – April 23rd – Nissan is offering a new service detailing exactly where Leaf drivers can charge their cars. The part that makes it workable for Nissan is that the information comes directly from Leaf drivers themselves; data from approximately 13,000 Leafs has been collected, sorted, and put online for all Leaf drivers to access.
Nissan Is Watching You (This Is A Good Thing)
Nissan’s Leaf EV ICT (Information and Communication Technology) System records where drivers charge their cars. The information then goes to the Nissan CARWINGS Data Center where it’s analyzed, and then fed back into the Leaf navigation system.

USA: Bob Lutz praises Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, says national security requires going electric

Bob Lutz is not going to take the attacks on electric cars lying down – the closest he’ll come to that is doing push-ups on The Colbert Report. After spending a few of his Forbes’ columns laying into right-wing pundits for their attacks on the Chevrolet Volt, he is switching to a positive message about how plug-in cars can help with American national security. It is not surprising that Lutz, a former Marine, co-authors the article with two former U.S. Marines commandants and the CEO of FedEx (the three are all members of Securing America’s Future Energy’s (SAFE) Energy Security Leadership Council). The gist? Well, here’s part of the opening paragraph:
When … threats exist because the United States is the protector of the world’s global oil supply lines, it is a clear illustration of how our nation’s over-reliance on a single, globally-priced fuel impacts our national and economic security. More...

USA: 2012 Nissan Leaf: No More Reservation Fees, Buy Like Any Other Car

When Nissan first launched the 2011 Leaf, it also launched a new way for would-be owners of the all-electric hatchback to reserve one.
Instead of relying on Nissan dealers to assess demand, Nissan opened up a dedicated reservation website, where those interested could pay $99 to be given a place in the Leaf reservation queue.
Now, nearly two years after Nissan launched that system, it has announced that customers who want to buy a 2012 Nissan Leaf can now do so at their local dealer, just like they would any other car. More...

Europe: Euro-Market Nissan Leaf Getting a Makeover, Lower Price

Nissan is planning to restyle the Leaf EV for European customers and may also reduce its price, according to Automotive News. While the Leaf available in Europe today is the same Japanese-sourced car sold in the U.S. and other markets, Nissan says it will tweak the EV’s exterior to suit European tastes before it begins Leaf production at Nissan’s Sunderland, England plant February of next year. Looking for Nissan’s Inflection Point on Electric Cars

Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn, delivering the keynote address Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show, said he’s “not changing his bullish” outlook on zero-emissions cars. He warned reporters afterwards not to take one or two months of sales results as an indication of the promise of electric car technology or his commitment to it. But production and sales numbers, at some point, are going to have to seriously increase, if Ghosn is going to make good on his words. More...
