YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Coda Automotive, the privately held start-up electric car manufacturer that plans to build a factory to manufacture its automotive-grade lithium-ion batteries near Columbus, creating 1,000 jobs, will distribute its all-electric sedan in Hawaii beginning next year.
Coda will begin limited deliveries of the vehicle to customers in California later this year and expects to make the first delivery to consumers and fleet customers in Hawaii in the third quarter of 2011, the company announced today.
The Coda sedan is a four-door, five-passenger car powered by an all-electric drive system, including a Coda-designed 33.8 kWh Lithium-ion battery system with 40% more usable energy than any electric vehicle in its class. Coda’s proprietary battery management and thermal management systems keep the battery within a specified temperature range which, a written statement issued by the company explains, “enhances safety and durability, and allows for a consistent and dependable range of up to 120 miles across all U.S. weather conditions.”
Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture, based in Streetsboro, will supply high-voltage content for the Coda sedan. The high-voltage system – wiring harnesses and electrical centers – included on Coda’s all-electric sedan was developed at Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture’s technical center in Champion, in conjunction with Delphi Packard engineers in China.
“Coda Automotive’s all-electric vehicle is another important addition to Hawaii’s efforts to transition to a clean energy economy,” says Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle in a prepared statement. “The state of Hawaii recognizes new electric vehicle technology, and the electrification of the transportation sector will play a critical role in helping Hawaii reduce its dependency on the use of fossil fuels and achieving our 70% clean-energy goal by 2030,” she says.
Lingle and the U.S. Department of Energy launched the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative in 2008, setting the 70% clean-energy goal.
“The government and leadership of Hawaii has clearly demonstrated that they are aggressively supporting the adoption of all-electric vehicles through their rebate program and commitment to developing charging infrastructure,” observes Kevin Czinger, president and CEO of Coda Automotive. “We look forward to bringing relief to the people in the State of Hawaii who are accustomed to traditionally high gas prices and are confident the Coda sedan will meet all of their day-to-day driving needs.”

Back at the beginning of the 80′s, Ford set out to build a true “World Car”–the Escort–a version of which was to appear on every continent on Earth, making it a global vehicle in a way that hadn’t been earnestly attempted since the Model T. Though I continue to drive a Ford Escort (or two) just about every day, I’d sure never driven an electric car. But with its new global electrification strategy, the next-gen Focus already billed as the company’s next “World Car,” and the all-new electric Focus spearheading its varied fleet of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, Ford is embarking on something far more ambitious than the last world-car effort.
