LOS ANGELES, Dec 09, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) announced the extension and amendment to the existing contract with the BYD Motors Inc., to continue the EV (electric vehicle) testing Program. The initial contract, signed in December 2010 was extended for one year term, starting January 1, 2012 and ending December 31, 2012. The F3DM (Dual Mode) sedans are used in HACLA fleets to conduct housing inspections. During the last year, the fleet has traveled over 37,000 miles and the HACLA has seen considerable savings in gas expenses. The BYD E6 may not have a name as evocative as the Nissan Leaf or the kerb appeal of the forthcoming electric Fiat 500, but if the performance figures being claimed by Chinese car builder are accurate, the family-sized electric car will, at 186 miles, have the longest range of any family-sized EV (electric vehicle) currently on sale. When running through the auto sales figures for the entire Chinese market earlier this month I was slightly surprised to see that BYD had a rather good month, despite the doom and gloom surrounding their brand BYD pulled in some strong sales with its F0, F3, L3 and G3 models, but the real surprise came from its new energy cars. In August 2011 BYD saw sales of 265 E6′s, which according to BYD’s PR department was due to a large fleet purchase by Shenzhen’s Pengcheng Taxi Company who took on 250 E6′s for their own fleet, 46 F3DM’s also rolled out of BYD bringing total yearly sales for that particular model to 395 units.

In the face of ever increasing oil prices some companies stepped up and produced EV’s, GM produced the Volt, Nissan made the Leaf, Honda tried another route with a hybrid sports car that the everyday man could afford, Tesla threw caution to the wind and made a super car for super salary owners. BYD on the other hand, realized that the average Chinese consumer wanted to save money and get better range from an EV, so they made the E6 EV. The first E6 was not exactly shouting “take my money” but this revised version is looking a lot more handsome around the front and rear ends than its predecessors. The original model looked like it was three years too late to the market in terms of design, but the below model is certainly showing a 22nd century vehicle.
