When Will the Aircraft-Inspired Aptera Electric Car Take Off?

When it comes to the futuristic Aptera 2e, an electric vehicle launched with all the fanfare due a “car of the future,” forward progress has demanded the patience of Job. But despite financial setbacks related to the economic downturn, coming up dry in its quest for $184 million in federal funding and testing hassles in the $10 million Progressive Auto X Prize, Aptera President and CEO Paul Wilbur is still putting on a happy face about getting his airplane-inspired three-wheeled battery car on the market next year (initially in California only). Automotive X PRIZE finals underway in Michigan

It’s very much down to the pointy-end for the remaining twelve teams in Progressive Automotive X PRIZE with the finals stage underway at the Michigan International Speedway. As we write this article teams are taking part in the critical range test where they must achieve 100 miles without charging or refueling (200 miles for the mainstream class) – perhaps the most challenging hurdle remaining for those still in the running for a share of the $10 million prize. Automotive X Prize: Aptera comes out swinging

With the Automotive X Prize competition, Aptera has stood apart from its competition–literally–being a germinating business that presents itself with a bold corporate image. Where the other competitors have been cramped in the shared garages, Aptera sets up shop alongside its impressive 18-wheeled hauler apart from the other teams. But this popular favorite was humbled in the Shakedown phase by the emergency-avoidance maneuver test, as captured on video. A key question I had entering this new, more vital phase, would Aptera be ready? More...

USA: 2011 Aptera 2e Design Finalized

California-based Aptera has been teasing us for upwards of two years now with images and even a prototype test-drive of its two-seat, teardrop-shaped 2e. (Some of us think the teardrop resembles a few other things, too—particularly in white—but we shant go there.) While the overall form has remained pretty consistent, the details have changed numerous times in the interests of safety, comfort, and engineering. At an airplane hanger in Carlsbad, California, Aptera rolled out what it claims is the final final design. The company says it will begin production in the spring of 2011. More...
