What’s been happening at Aptera? The hyper-aerodynamic vehicle company is still moving forward, just not as fast as the original plans called for (remember when the car was supposed to be available in 2009 2010?). In the company’s latest email newsletter, much space is dedicated to explaining where thing stand with the request for money from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing loan program (still waiting to hear back), the development and design of the 2-series vehicles (still testing) and why Aptera hasn’t sold any vehicles yet (still waiting, see ATVMLP). Three vehicles emerged as class winners at the Automotive X-Prize. One, the Li-Ion Motors Wave II, captured victory after a grueling 100-mile Combined Performance and Efficiency Test was completed. Five vehicles in the Alternative Side-by-Side Class competed in this tiebreaker event and, by less than two-tenths of a second, the Wave II emerged as the champ. Li-Ion Motors was presented with a $2.5 million award for winning its class, and the other four teams, those that competed in the tiebreaker but lost, received nothing. Or so we thought.

Gary Neuschafer is ready to drive an electric car if its makers promise him it can carry him safely, round-trip, to Salina from his Lindsborg home on a single charge.
“The performance of it is impressive to me,” Neuschafer said Monday morning after taking a spin in the two-seater Aptera 2e electric vehicle on the streets around the Bicentennial Center. “It’ll run (speed-wise) with traffic. But we live at Lindsborg and it’s 40 miles round-trip. Some of these electric vehicles will run 50, 60 miles and that’s it.”
The Aptera — a Greek word for “wingless flight” — delivers more than 100 miles on a charge at a speed of up to 90 miles an hour.
