BURLINGTON, Vermont — The University of Vermont has developed a certification program that is helping transportation companies across the country reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve vehicle energy efficiency and save money.

The eRating certification program was developed by the University of Vermont Extension Certification for Sustainable Transportation program, which recently completed its inaugural vehicle certification cycle.

The eRating certification is bestowed on drivers who learn techniques to improve fuel economy such as limiting aggressive accelerations and idling. It also uses an index that measures the use of low-emissions technology, alternative fuels and greenhouse gas emissions calculated per passenger mile.
