San Diego zooms past Portland in clean tech rankings

Rising star San Diego moves up four spots on the 2014 U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index, released Tuesday by Portland-based Clean Edge Inc.

Portland comes in fourth while Oregon holds its third-place post in the separate state rankings, behind California and Massachusetts, respectively.

The Clean Edge index is based on clean tech policies, public investment, hybrid and electric vehicle use (and charging stations), use of renewable energy and smart meters, patents awarded, venture capital secured and the number of LEED-certified green building projects, among other metrics.

While Portland and Oregon remain clean-tech leaders, the 2014 report confirms that plenty of other communities are making inroads.

Oregon held its number three position on the strength of its embrace of hybrid and electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and commitment to green building techniques.
