BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host its third annualSustainable Smart Cities Symposium at the DoubleTree Hotel Birmingham on Thursday from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The event, organized by The Sustainable Smart Cities Research Center at UAB, will focus on sustainable, innovative ways to make Birmingham a smarter and more livable city.

The symposium – with about 15 speakers from Europe, South America and the United State – is free and open to the public, according to UAB spokeswoman Katherine Shonesy.

The event is designed to help stakeholders in Birmingham, as well as scientists and academics from UAB and other schools in the region, stay at the forefront of urban sustainability and development, according to Shonesy.

Some of the topics to be discussed include urban revitalization, smart technologies and the link between transportation and economic development.
