USA: Community View: Westchester commits to EV future

Westchester residents wondering what the future will look like can get a peek now in the parking lots of some of our local train stations, and even in the parking garages near a few malls and shopping areas. That’s where you’ll find charging stations which supply electricity for plug-in electric vehicles – EVs – all-electric cars and different kinds of hybrids.

In White Plains, there are 10 charging stations at the TransCenter, with more EV stations to come at four parking garages. The Chappaqua Train Station has 10 stations, too, jointly funded by the New York Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Interestingly, the New York state Constitution currently prevents municipalities from investing and providing charging stations for public use, but that will change.

The increase in publicly accessible charging stations around the county corresponds with expanding ownership of electric vehicles. Sales of EVs, including plug-in hybrids and battery electrics, doubled in 2013 from the previous year. Consumers shopping for a new EV are finding lots of new models to choose from, as manufacturers hustle to meet the interest and demand.
