Mitsubishi plug-in hybrid achieves top safety award

Mitsubishi must be feeling jubilant today after revealing that its new Outlander plug-in hybrid has achieved a five star award from the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) – the Japanese equivalent of the Euro NCAP safety assessment.

That it can add to its existing five stars from the aforementioned European safety authority, passing with flying colours tests, including electric shock safety and high-voltage battery electrolyte leakage in its latest test.
That means that both the plug-in hybrid and standard versions of the Outlander have the top five stars from JNCAP.
Now on sale in the UK, the Outlander PHEV is fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine teamed with two electric motors, and is rated as achieving 148mpg on a combined cycle while emitting just 44g/km CO2. On electric power alone, the PHEV can manage as much as 32 miles, and a total driving range of 512 miles.
