City installs long-awaited solar battery for electric vehicles

The electric car charging station at the corner of Second and Ivy had batteries installed on May 2, so that energy brought in from solar panels can be used to charge electric vehicles. “The sales pitch for this was that it included solar panels, but up until now there hasn’t been any battery for energy storage,” said Tillamook city manager Paul Wyntergreen. “So, anyone who had hooked up before now has been pulling energy off the grid.”

The station, designed and installed by EV4, a Portland-based company, is the first of its kind anywhere on the Oregon coast. Unlike most charging stations in the state, the EV4 station is capable of fast-charging electric cars in less than an hour. Plugged into a normal outlet, electric vehicles can take 10 hours to completely charge
