College Students Made a $3,000 Kit to Convert Any Car to a Hybrid

Wanna turn a Hummer H2 into a hybrid? Go for it. A Chevy Avalanche? No problem. Students at the University of Middle Tennessee developed a $3,000 kit to convert almost any car to a plug-in hybrid. The first conversion was with a 1994 Honda Accord after five years of research.

The system uses a lithium-ion battery in the trunk to power the rear wheels and give a break to their engine-run counterparts in the front. With the kit the Accord gets between 50 and 100 percent gas mileage.

Now the technology could reach the marketplace. The professor in charge of the study is in talk with investors to back building a production version of the kit. Learn more by watching the video below:
