South Korea has decided to incorporate an electric vehicle (EV) charging standard used by U.S. and European car manufacturers after an industry study showed that it is compatible with the country’s smart grid, a local auto company said Thursday.

According to GM Korea Co., the state-run Korea Environment Corp. (KMC) recently concluded that the Society of Automotive Engineers Combo System is compatible with the advanced metering infrastructure being set up as part of the country’s smart grid. KMC also said the Combo did not disrupt the power-line communications protocol.

The carmaker, the local unit of U.S. auto giant General Motors Co., said the conclusion eases recharging anxieties for people interested in buying EVs made by U.S. and certain European carmakers.
