Volkswagen explores new, more powerful batteries for EVs

Volkswagen is reported to be testing lithium ion batteries which are expected to deliver up to four times the power of existing battery packs to near double the range of its electric models.

According to The Telegraph, the carmaker is working to develop batteries would deliver up to 80kWh from a similar volume as currently used by the Golf Blue-e-motion’s 26.5kWh battery pack.


There are no details exactly known about the chemistry used in the new battery packs but speaking from the Geneva Motor Show, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen’s board member responsible for development confirmed that company was in the process of testing new, more powerful battery packs.
