Japan to set renewable energy targets in new plan: report

[TOKYO] Japan set targets for renewable energy in a basic energy framework the government is about to finalise, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Wednesday, as the country moves away from nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster of March 2011.

The plan sets a target for renewable sources including hydro, solar, wind and geothermal of more than 13.5 per cent by 2020 and more than 20 per cent by 2030, the Yomiuri said, without citing the source of its information.

The shutdown of Japan’s nuclear fleet has caused imports of fossil fuels like coal and gas to jump and prompted a shift into renewable energy after the government introduced generous subsidies for solar, wind and other renewables in 2012.
