Audi prepares to launch wave of large plug-in hybrid vehicles as ‘e-tron’ brand grows

Audi’s chief engineer, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, today promised that ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid versions of Audi’s larger cars are to become available in the future.

Audi already plans to launch a plug-in hybrid version of the A3 hatchback this summer, which uses a 1.4-liter TFSI engine mated to a powerful electric motor. The larger ‘e-tron’ cars will build on that technology.

“The A3 e-tron is just the beginning. We are systematically transferring its plug-in hybrid technology to our mid-size and large series,” Hackenberg said at the company’s annual conference this morning. “The Audi A6, Audi A8 and the next Audi Q7 will also be available as plug-in hybrids.”
