Researchers at the University of Delaware and the state of Delaware are scouting locations to set up electric vehicle charging stations throughout the state.

The program has a budget of $80,000 from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control – proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. It will fund charging stations in five or six spots, with two chargers per location, program representatives said.

There are only a few publicly available charging stations in Delaware, including the well publicized supercharging station owned by Tesla at the Delaware Welcome Center. It works only on Tesla vehicles.

University researchers are trying to suss out the most logical places for the stations. Willett Kempton, a professor in UD’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, said someone traveling between Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach with a small battery and on a cold day likely can get to Dover and recharge there.
