UK: LEAF plugs into growing demand for electric cars

N ISSAN says the dramatic increase in the number of recharging points around the country – which make driving an electric car easier – helped sales of its battery powered LEAF rocket last month.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 230 of the all-electric, zero emission cars were registered in January, a startling 1,000 per cent rise on the same period a year ago.

The LEAF is the clear leader in the growing EV (electric vehicle) market and nearly three quarters of all pure electric vehicles sold in January 2014 were the Nissans, continuing the trend secured last year.

The news that the British-built Nissan LEAF remains the market leader came after a month when the company hit major milestones in terms of global sales and the installation of infrastructure.

First of all it announced the sale of the 3,000th LEAF in the UK, and this was followed soon after by news that Hampshire dentist Brett Garner had become the 100,000th LEAF owner worldwide.
