Programs aim to boost sales, leases of electric vehicles in Connecticut

NEW HAVEN >> The state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is working with a trade group representing Connecticut automobile dealers to recognize those who sell or lease the highest number of electric vehicles over the next six months.

DEEP officials and the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association (CARA) will announce the launch of the programs at a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lawn Club on Whitney Avenue. The first ever “Connecticut Revolutionary Dealer Award,” will be presented to the dealer that sells or leases the highest number of new EVs — including plug-in hybrids — and the other will go to the dealer who sells or leases the most EVs as a percentage of total sales during the period Feb. 1 to July 31.

“Inspiring Connecticut’s auto dealers to come up with creative and innovative ways to convince car buyers that electric is the way to go and will support our effort to get more EVs on the road,” DEEP Interim Commissioner Rob Klee said in a statement Tuesday.

Jim Fleming, president of CARA, said in a statement that “auto dealers are critical partners in putting Connecticut on the road to clean fuels and clean vehicles.”

“They are the first and most critical ‘hands-on’ point of contact with prospective new car purchasers,” Fleming said.
