LEAF snatches 45 per cent market share for zero emissions cars

Nissan-Renault Alliance celebrates as LEAF sales grew 77 per cent last year

Worldwide sales of Nissan’s flagship LEAF electric car rose by three-quarters last year, according to latest figures from the company demonstrating how the market for zero emissions vehicles is continuing to gain traction.

The Renault-Nissan alliance posted its sales figures for 2013 on Friday, showing that sales from its zero emissions range rose 50 per cent as demand for Nissan’s LEAF and Renault’s Kangoo Z.E, Fluence Z.E., ZOE and Twizy models continued to rise.

Renault’s four EV models saw a modest 13 per cent sales increase to just over 19,000 units. However, Nissan’s LEAF led the market with demand rising 77 per cent to nearly 48,000 cars, accounting for 45 per cent of all zero emissions vehicles sold last year.

Three years after its launch, Nissan last month sold its 100,000th LEAF to a dentist from Hampshire.
