KW06 | Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture commits to 100% renewable energy by 2040 – SolarServer

Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture has committed to become entirely energy self-sufficient using only renewable energy by 2040, according to a statement by the World Future Council (Hamburg, Germany).

The move has been applauded by members of the Global 100% Renewable Energy Campaign. In doing so, Fukushima will join a network of 74 regions and municipalities that have already reached 100% renewable energy status in Germany.

“Fortunately, Japan does not have to reinvent the wheel,” said Peter Moser, Division Manager for Regional Sustainable Development of the Competence Network for Decentralized Energy Technologies (deENet). “Case studies from around the world provide valuable experiences and tools to bring socio-economic development by transitioning towards 100% renewable energy.”

Fukushima Disaster inspires Japanese feed-in tariff

Inspired by meltdown of reactors at Fukushima Number One nuclear power plant, Japan implemented the world’s most generous feed-in tariff in 2012. As a result of this policy the nation became the world’s second-largest PV market in 2013, installing 7 GW during the year.

Japan has also been a leader in energy storage, and the nation’s Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry (METI) has supported both domestic battery makers and large-scale demonstration storage projects.
