Electric cars are all the buzz in Fort Myers

Though the amount of money they earned in 2013 isn’t shockingly high, there’s more buzz surrounding Lee County’s electric car charging stations than in their first year.

“The use has continued to grow as the number of electric vehicles increases and knowledge of the stations increases,” Lee County Facilities Services Director Rich Beck said.

Between their installation in Downtown Fort Myers by Lee County in May 2012 and the end of that year, the three chargers took in $50.

But officials estimate total revenue in 2013 was $450 — an 800 percent increase.

The county paid California-based company ChargePoint $19,000 for the three chargers in the public parking lots on Heitman and Hendry streets and in the juror parking lot on Widman Way.
