Donors aid radiation testing in Pacific

WOODS HOLE — Officials at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution say they have collected more than 100 donations in a crowdsourcing campaign to measure radioactivity in the Pacific Ocean off the U.S. West Coast.

WHOI scientist Ken Buesseler launched the campaign and citizen science website, “How Radioactive Is Our Ocean,” in the wake of the damage to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor in Japan in 2011.

In three trips to Japan, Buesseler and his team of scientists detected continued leakage of radioactive groundwater into the waters off the coast.
