AeroVironment TurboCord Is A Two-in-One Charging Solution

turbocord-mediaphotos-9-large-large-1Charging an electric car can be a painif you’re unprepared, but the new AeroVironment TurboChord is a two-in-one EV charger plugs in almost anywhere. Offering both 120 volt and 240 volt charging capabilities, the TurboCord is a cheaper alternative to a permanent home charging station.

Skipping the installation process altogether, the TurboCord just needs a standard 120 or 240 volt outlet to plug into. At its highest setting, the TurboCord can recharged a Nissan Leaf, for example, in just over six hours. A standard Level 2 charger takes about 3.5 hours, while refilling via a regular outlet takes more than 16 hours. It’s smaller, easier-to-carry charger too, weighing in at a svelte 5 pounds. Compare that to the DIY Level 2 charger AeroVironment released in late 2012, and you can see the appeal of a smaller, more portable charging option.

While an electric car can charge up from just about any grounded 120 volt outlet, 16 hours is a long time to wait for a fully charged car. Six hours is a bit more reasonable, and just another step towards making EVs more viable for the average car buyer. AeroVironment is one of the big names when it comes to EV charging, having inked deals with the likes of Nissan and Washington State.
