UT professor honored for work on lithium-ion battery

At the age of 91, John B. Goodenough, an engineering professor at the University of Texas, has racked up a string of awards in a long career. Now he has been named a recipient of engineering’s highest honor for helping to develop the lithium-ion battery used in cellphones, laptops, power tools and other goods.

The National Academy of Engineering named him Monday as one of four recipients of the Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering in recognition of their roles in developing the lithium-ion battery. Goodenough focused on developing the materials used in such batteries.
