The word

Mercedes is promising the cars for an early 2015 release, according to Dr. Thomas Weber at Daimler, who is the R&D chief for Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class Plug-in Hybrid will be in showrooms in Europe late this year and will come to North America shortly thereafter, sometime in the first quarter of 2015. The C-Class plug-in will follow.

The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid was introduced last summer and features a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and an 80kW electric motor, together producing 328 horsepower. The li-ion batteries provide about 19 miles of range on the Euro cycle (probably 14-16 for EPA in U.S.).

The S500 PHEV will be followed by the 2015 C-Class, which unveiled in Detroit earlier this month. Its range will be longer, about 31 miles on the European cycle, and the car will also be offered as a standard series hybrid.

And so …

Both vehicles will use the same plug-in platform (engine, motor), but the smaller and lighter C will have better performance and range.
