Golf GTE: Volkswagen’s 157mpg plug-in hybrid Golf gets christened with sacred ‘GT’ initials |

The plug-in hybrid version of the Volkswagen’s most popular car will be called the Golf GTE, the company’s powertrain chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser revealed at a recent event in Sweden.

The moniker follows Volkswagen’s historical form of prefixing more high-spec Golf models with ‘GT’, namely the GTI (a performance Golf) and the GTD (its diesel-powered sibling).

Due to launch in Europe during the second half of 2014, the plug-in hybrid Golf uses both a 150hp 1.4-liter gasoline engine and a 109hp electric motor, giving it performance almost on par with the Golf GTI yet efficiency that far outstrips even the ultra-frugal Golf BlueMotion. Overall the Golf GTE’s powertrain will develop 204hp, with the combination of power and efficiency making it arguably the most desirable Golf ever built.
