USA: Consumers like electric cars, but want them cheaper

Here’s a clue as to why electric-car sales remain miniscule:

Although a solid majority of consumers like the idea of an electric car, most want them priced at less than $25,000 – several-thousand dollars less than even the cheapest mainstream vehicle.

In fact, 71 percent of those surveyed by Navigant Research in Boulder said they want their next car to cost less than $25,000 and 41 percent insisted on less than $20,000, according to autoblog.com.

The average price of a new vehicle now is about $30,000, and electric or alternative-fuel cars can be even higher.

The Nissan Leaf, for example – whose price was recently reduced to spur sales – starts at $28,800. The Chevrolet Volt, an extended-range electric, begins at $40,540.

Still, 67 percent of those surveyed had favorable opinions of hybrids and 61 percent thought positively about electric vehicles, autoblog.com said.

Oddly, while survey participants had generally positive views of alternative-fuel vehicles, they knew little about particular models.

Only 44 percent were “somewhat familiar” with the Chevy Volt, while 31 percent knew something about the Nissan Leaf.
