Trina to Build 1-Gigawatt Solar Project in Western China – Bloomberg

Trina Solar Ltd., China’s second-largest solar-panel maker, agreed to build a plant in the western Xinjiang region to produce 1 gigawatt of power, about the same amount as a new nuclear reactor.
Trina signed a framework agreement with the local authority in Turpan Prefecture to develop the ground-mounted project, it said today in a statement. The company also plans a factory in the area to make the photovoltaic modules used in solar panels.
“The solar plants will ensure a stable supply of clean energy and improve reliability of electricity supply to the surrounding regions,” Chief Executive Officer Jifan Gao said in the statement. “The module production facility will also create jobs and stimulate the growth of the local economy.”
China, the world’s biggest polluter, has accelerated the expansion of renewable-energy capacity to meet growing power demand while tackling emissions. The East Asian nation, also the largest panel producer, expects to have on-grid solar capacity of 10 gigawatts by year-end, more than double that in 2012.
