Tesla Moves to Expand Charging Network For Coast-to-Coast Trips

Electric –car maker Tesla Motors said it is expanding its network of fast-charging stations to allow its cars to travel long distances more conveniently.

The new stations, called Superchargers, are opening today in Michigan and Indiana. They are meant to fill in gaps in a system designed to eventually allow electric cars to travel throughout the U.S. without waiting hours to recharge their batteries.

The new station in Michigan, the first of three planned for the state and will allow travel between Detroit, Lake Michigan, and Chicago. It is particularly symbolic because of its location in St. Joseph, near the intersection of Interstates 96 and 94. The two big highways are familiar to people traveling to and from the Motor City and surrounding towns that have long played major roles in the domestic auto industry.
