Tesla charging station coming to Lumberton

LUMBERTON — Tesla Motors plans to install a charging station for its trademark electric vehicles in Lumberton.

Local business developer Rob Redfearn reached out to the Silicon Valley-based automaker in July, asking it to consider Lumberton as a potential site for a charging station.

“I had friends with Tesla cars in California who told me that Tesla had been installing stations down the West Coast and thought we should approach them about considering Lumberton as an East Coast location. As it turns out, Lumberton was already on their radar,” Redfearn said in a statement.

There are currently 37 charging stations in North America, two of which are located in North Carolina, according to the company’s website.

The Lumberton station will be constructed outside the Texas Steakhouse restaurant on Fayetteville Road in January and will eight charging terminals. Tesla owners may use the terminals, which require between 20 minutes to an hour to completely charge a vehicle, for free.
