Marco Islanders enjoy test drives in Tesla electric cars | The News-Press | news-press.com

No familiar V-8 growl, but a silent whoosh sending you down the highway like an arrow.

That was the general consensus of about three dozen takers who turned out for a Tesla electric car promotion held during an open house Saturday at Island Automotive.

“It’s awesome,” said Vicki Pershing of the ride. “It pushed me back in the seat.”

The promotion was initiated by Tesla owner Richard Shanahan, who earlier this year took the Sun Times on a spin along the road leading in and out of the Isles of Capri. It was all within the speed limit, of course, but take-off was like a bottle rocket.

The promotion was initiated by Tesla owner Richard Shanahan, who earlier this year took the Sun Times on a spin along the road leading in and out of the Isles of Capri. It was all within the speed limit, of course, but take-off was like a bottle rocket.

Island Automotive owner Keith Pershing made a point of parking Shanahan’s vehicle next to the Model T Ford that he maintains for the Marco Island Historical Society.

“You’re looking at the Alpha and Omega of motoring,” said Pershing, who was also impressed by the power and handling of the electric car.

He said people who’d showed up for the test drives were potentially serious buyers.

“Most of them had the means to buy a car like this (at $70,000 and up), and I would be surprised if there aren’t at least a couple of sales coming out of this,” Pershing said.

Tesla unveiled the Tesla Model S all-electric sedan in 2009, and had two battery pack options for a range of up to 265 miles per charge.

Unlike the internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving pieces that spark, pump, belch, and groan, says the manufacturer, the Tesla motor has only one moving piece: the rotor.

As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, like flipping a switch. Hit the accelerator. In 5.4 seconds, Model S is traveling 60 mph, without hesitation and without a drop of gasoline.

As its spec list states: The vehicle does 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, has a top speed of 125 mph, and sends the following amount of emission into the air: zero.
