China Li-ion cell capacity grows over 40% in 2013, says IEK

The total production capacity of lithium (Li)-ion cell makers in China has increased over 40% in 2013, much higher than the industry average of 10-20%, according to the Industrial Economics & Knowledge Center (IEK) under Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute.

China-based makers’ combined global share for Li-ion cell shipments has risen from 26.9% in 2012 to 30% in 2013, while the combined global share of South Korea-based makers has inched up from 42.6% to 42.9%, and Japan-based makers have dropped from 29.6% to 26.9%, IEK indicated.

Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) and Tianjing Lishen Battery are the main producers of Li-ion cells in China, while the main Korea-based makers are Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, and Japan’s top based makers are Panasonic and Sony.
