Plug-in hybrids are a good idea, as they provide the possibility of driving without using a drop of fuel on short trips, and its owner is never struck by range anxiety because a gasoline engine is always readily available. Unfortunately, we won’t be getting Honda’s new PHEV.

The unplugged, 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid will be sold in Canada, though, and that’s worth mentioning because it boasts impressive fuel economy numbers. In fact, its 3.7/4.0 L/100km city/highway ratings match those of the Toyota Prius and beat those of every other midsize hybrid sedan.

Limited range
Like the Ford Fusion Energi, the Accord Plug-In hybrid goes one step further by offering a higher-capacity battery pack and a small EV range. In the case of the Honda, we’re talking about approximately 21 km on a full charge, which takes an hour with a 240V outlet and three hours with a household, 120V power source.
