Washoe County Health Department promotes electric cars

RENO, Nev. (KRNV & – When you think of the Washoe County Health Department, an electric car might not be the first thing on your mind. But a Nissan LEAF serves as a “rolling billboard” to promote the use of electric cars. The LEAF gets up to 75 miles on a single charge. It has no gas back-up which means zero emissions. Craig Petersen, with the Washoe County Air Quality District said, “What electric vehicles are doing is reducing tail pipe emissiona dn reduced tail pipe emissions equals cleaner air quality, it’s as simple as that.”

In order the LEAF to run, it must be charged and the County is offering other electric car users the opportunity to “plug in” and use it’s electric charger station at the 9th Street Complex for free.

Travis Johnson, with NV Energy, drives a Tesla, which is a more upscale electric car. He said, “Vehicles like the Tesla can go upwards of 265 miles on a charge and then you have vehicles like the Chevy Volt. Once the battery is depleted, they keep going on gasoline and they can get all the way across the country.”
