The task of replacing all 942 of its Class 5 work trucks with plug-in hybrids is now officially underway at utility PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric).

PG&E received a $2.2 million grant from the California Energy Commission and used some of that money to purchase its first plug-in hybrid Class 5 truck.

The truck, manufactured by Electric Vehicles International (EVI) in Stockton, California, has an electric-only range of up to 45 miles and is claimed to cut fuel consumption by 30% in hybrid mode, as compared to conventional Class 5 trucks.

The truck, manufactured by Electric Vehicles International (EVI) in Stockton, California, has an electric-only range of up to 45 miles and is claimed to cut fuel consumption by 30% in hybrid mode, as compared to conventional Class 5 trucks.

Furthermore, the plug-in hybrid trucks can supply temporary power to the grid during planned or unplanned outages.

This is plug-in hybrid truck #1 of up to 942 that will eventually be in use at PG&E. The utility company’s goal is to “replace all 942 of its conventional fuel Class 5 vehicles, including bucket trucks, flat beds and other service trucks, with plug-in electric hybrid models.”
