Schools asked to consider purchasing electric vehicles

Bear Creek Middle students could soon be getting a real hands-on education in the art of making an electric vehicle.

Barrow Schools CTAE director Dr. Pam McGee asked the school board during Tuesday’s meeting to consider approving the new school’s purchase of two electric vehicles for the technology classes run by teacher Curtis Mathis.

The two electric vehicle package cost a total of $14,500, with the money coming out of a CTAE Equipment Grant the school received.

The packages, which include all necessary tools and learning materials, would allow the technology classes to build and then test out the go-kart-like vehicles. They could then be broken down and built again for the next class.

“It’s really a perfect way for the students in STEM to get authentic learning,” McGee said. “Curtis Mathis spent a lot of time researching this.”
