Nissan completes first road test of self-driving car| News Centre Car Insurance

The first public road test of Nissan’s Autonomous Drive technology has been carried out in Japan.

The Nissan LEAF electric car is fully automated and its initial test on a Japanese highway was deemed a success, boosting Nissan’s hopes of commencing commercial sales of the vehicle by 2020.

The Autonomous Drive technology used in the car assesses road conditions and controls steering, braking and acceleration accordingly. The vehicle is able to merge with traffic, change lanes and maintain a safe distance from other road users.

Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan Vice Chairman, was a passenger on the recent road test. He said in a statement: “Nissan seeks a safer, more comfortable and environmentally-friendly mobile future.

“Through these tests on an expressway, we hope to further advance our technological development, with the goal of soon implementing Autonomous Drive vehicles.”
