China Hopes Cities Can Help Boost Electric Car Sales

Beijing is turning to cities around the country to help it jump start the country’s sputtering market for new-energy vehicles.

Last year, Chinese consumers bought only 11,375 electric vehicles, out of total vehicle sales of 19.3 million, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group.

IHS Automotive analyst Namrita Chow said, however, that what matters is whether the government actually ensures the selected cities and urban areas deliver on their promise to promote the vehicles.

Ms. Chow said she understands that pilot cities must aim to have at least 10,000 of the vehicles on their roads . “If they deploy the number of [new-energy vehicles] they say they will, you’re going to see a substantial increase in sales in the ball park of 280,000 vehicles or possibly more,” she said. It wasn’t clear by when cities would be expected to achieve such goals.
