BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sold out for 2014 |

Despite its high price the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid has sold out for its first year of availability.

Speaking to Reuters at last week’s LA Auto Show, BMW’s head of marketing and sales Ian Robertson added that the company has also taken nearly 10,000 orders for the smaller i3, due to go on sale during the second quarter of 2014. Robertson didn’t say how many examples of the i8 BMW had sold.

While the i3 is designed as a pure electric car, most buyers will spec the optional range extender that boosts range to around 180 miles. The i3 starts at $41,350, rising to $45,200 for therange extender version.

While filling the i8 order books will satisfy BMW’s accountants, BMW will take real encouragement from the 10,000 orders for the i3. The company has always maintained that its electric sub-brand will be profitable in its own right, rather than sapping funds from sales of BMW’s mainstream vehicles in what has been described as a glorified marketing campaign.
