LOS ANGELES — The 2015 Volkswagen E-Golf, which takes aim at the Fiat 500e and the Nissan Leaf, will go on sale in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2014, said the automaker. The E-Golf makes its North American debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

It was shown originally at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The German EV is a critical one for the brand since it is the first fully electric Volkswagen for the U.S. market. Pricing has not been announced. The E-Golf will go on sale in “select states” that have yet to be named by VW. It will be available only as a hatchback.

Volkswagen said the E-Golf aims to have a range between 70 and 90 miles. It did not offer an estimate on the car’s miles-per-gallon (MPGe) equivalent. The drivetrain consists of a 115-horsepower electric motor, a lithium-ion battery and a single-speed EQ270 transmission. Top speed is electronically limited to 87 mph.
