Young, suburban residents most likely to consider buying electric cars

In September, nearly 7 percent of U.S. consumers in a nationally representative sample said they were “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to purchase or lease a plug-in electric vehicle over the next 12 months.

The new Zpryme survey conducted in partnership with Central Texas Fuel Independence Project and Austin Energy, surveyed 1,000 adults monthly from February to September to glean interest in electric car purchases.

The age groups most likely to consider purchasing such a vehicle within the next year were 18-24 and 25-34, according to the survey. Residents in suburban areas ranked highest in geographic interest.

What’s more, a spike in the August poll of consumers “very likely” to buy or lease an electric vehicle reinforces the correlation between high summer gas prices and a desire for better fuel economy, Zpryme officials add.
