LG Chem Ltd., the world’s largest lithium-ion battery maker, said Tuesday that it will churn out cable batteries for IT devices in the coming years.

LG Chem said it has completed the development of cable batteries optimized for wearable IT devices, which can bend and tie and still provide power. The company said it will mass produce them in a couple of years.

The cable batteries use low power and produce less heat despite extended use, and have waterproof functionality, the company said.

Along with the completion of the cable battery development, LG Chem has started mass producing two new types of batteries, such as the stepped battery and the curved battery, the company said.

LG Chem said it started churning out the stepped battery, which has improved storage capacity compared to other batteries, from July at its plant in Nanjing, China.
