Plugged in: N.C.’s first Tesla Motors Supercharger opens at Alamance Crossing

With the plugging of an outlet Tuesday, Burlington became a destination for sleek, luxury electric cars traveling the East Coast.

The state’s first Tesla Motors Supercharger station opened Tuesday at Alamance Crossing. The station — in the parking lot between Dillard’s and Carousel Cinemas — offers free charging for Tesla’s electric cars, which can travel up to 300 miles on a full battery.

The Burlington station helps complete the manufacturer’s route from Boston to Miami, and will likely be a frequent stop for drivers out of Winston-Salem, Raleigh and Charlotte, said Tesla Motors spokesman Patrick Jones. The state’s second charging station is scheduled to open later this year in Rocky Mount.

About 20 Model S owners from around the state were at Tuesday’s grand opening, demonstrating how the cars work and locating the spot they say they’ll visit often while they travel the Southeast.

Daniel and Koscina Reynolds, of Harrisburg, purchased their Model S a few months ago. They commute often between the Charlotte suburb and Richmond, Va., and said the Burlington charging station will become a pit stop.
