Ossia Granted 4 U.S. Patents for Remote Wireless Power Technology

Patents enable development and creation of the breakthrough Cota wireless remote power system

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Ossia, Inc. (, the company behind the groundbreaking Cota remote wireless power system, announced it has been awarded four patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office: U.S. Patent No. 8,159 364, U.S. Patent No. 8,446,248, U.S. Patent No. 8,410,953 and U.S. Patent No. 8,558,661.

These 4 patents pertain to Ossia’s wireless power transmission system, which was recently unveiled as part of the company’s Cota technology. Cota, the first commercially viable remote wireless power system, redefines wireless power by automatically delivering targeted energy to multiple devices from as far away as 30 feet, without requiring line of sight.

“Ossia’s initial patents represent a monumental achievement in wireless power technology that no other company has been able to accomplish — a wireless remote power system that automatically charges multiple devices without line of sight within a 30-foot radius,” said Hatem Zeine, CEO and inventor of the Cota technology. “When we originally filed these patent claims, the chief prior art cited by the patent office was 20-years old and addressed very different markets in terms of scale and functionality. Clearly, Ossia’s Cota technology is not only revolutionary by definition, but it also comes at a much-needed time in this rapidly growing mobile space.”

The patents each detail information regarding Ossia’s wireless power transmission system for providing wireless charging and/or primary power to electronic/electrical devices via microwave energy. The patents include continuations of Ossia’s existing technology, building upon one another. As noted in the patents, microwave energy is focused to a location in response to receiving a beacon signal from a beacon device by a power transmitter, having one or more adaptively-phased microwave array emitters. Antennas embedded within the device to be charged receive and rectify the microwave energy and use it for battery charging and/or for primary power.

In addition to these four patents granted by the U.S. Patent Office, Ossia owns a growing portfolio of issued, granted and pending patent assets that cover both the core of the company’s wireless power technology and key aspects of its deployment. This patent portfolio has a global reach.

Ossia’s smart antenna technology uses phased arrays to transfer power without the use of inductive coils, ultrasonic waves, magnetic resonance, charging pads or mats. The Cota technology consists of two parts: a charger and a receiver. The Cota-powered charger automatically locates Cota receivers built into devices or batteries by detecting low power beacons that are sent by the receivers omnidirectionally. Once they reach the charger, these beacons allow the power signals sent by the charger to follow the same path back to the receiver, focusing energy at the exact location of the device. Cota provides power to multiple devices, even as they move around within the environment. The laws of physics make the Cota technology inherently safe, naturally avoiding anything that absorbs energy, such as people, pets and even plants.

About Ossia
